Pre-production 1.3

Mise – En – Scene

Within this blog post I will be including and discussing the different types of Mise –En – Scene elements we would be using in our one-minute production.
I will be discussing the type of props, settings, structure, Costume (Make up) and characters we would be using within our single camera production.

Props:
§  Computer/Laptop – These props would be used in order to show the element of social networks and the communication they are having through the Internet.
§  Phones (Mobile Phones) – these would be used for other types of communication such as face time, Skype or even normal phone calls.
§  Bedroom Equipment – these would be from school stationery to having laptop chargers, all those typical equipment’s within a teenagers bedroom.
§  Feminine and Masculine products (Make up, Razors etc.) – these would be equipment’s in the bedrooms of each character to show the whole purpose of girls always putting make up on and all sorts.

Disadvantage of these props would be some products would be expensive to hire or get at that time, this indicates that it would make it more harder for the production to go at ease, indicating that the producer would have to use other equipment’s which would make the production less professional
Advantage of these props is that they are showing a more natural and realistic type of environment indicating that it would make the production more of a genuine surrounding and scene.

Setting
§   2 Bedroom
§  2 Houses
§  Living Room
§  Restaurant
§  Park

Story Board

Within this blog post, it shows the story board our our production and how we want our production to be setting out to be. Within these images it shows the stages and levels on how the production will convey as:

Diary Log 1.2

Diary log - 15/11/2012

In today's lesson we created a clear structure on all of the pre production tasks, that we need to complete to create our one minute single camera production. The tasks are highlighted in a previous blog post and will be updated weekly on what we have completed and what is still outstanding.

We also came up with a production team name and logo, which was "Equilibrium Prod." based on Torodov's narrative theory on equilibrium. The logo was then created on Adobe Photoshop.

We also completed some pre-production tasks today such as;

  • identifying our audience
  • determining our moral or message of our story
  • creating a mood board on our single camera production ideas
  • came up with a basic idea/structure on the story of our product
  • and create a treatment/proposal, which was created on Prezi, and presented to the client.

Pre-Production 1.2

Introduction

Within this lesson I made sure that I have completed up to 4 criteria’s within the task list.  So I was making sure that these elements were met at the end of lesson. These elements include making a mood board, identifying who our target audience are, what’s the moral/purpose of our single camera production and our overall idea (proposal/treatment)

1)   Equilibrium (Structure of the narrative)
Beginning: Couple meets through a social networking site (Facebook). They think that they are both what they were expecting (Personality wise)

Middle: The boy has a image of how he thinks the girl is like and the same goes to the girl. However within editing techniques there would be a split screen showing what each person is doing.

End: The couple meets up and the boy isn’t what the girl expected, so he doesn’t approve of her and goes away.

2)   Target Audience
Our target audience our small production would be people who are at the age of 16 – 30, who are the ages which are in relationships and use these particular type of social networking sites the most.

3)   Moral
The moral of our production is to “be prepared for the unexpected” and also “Don’t expect what you see or believe until you examine it”.

     4) Mood Board

Diary Log 1,1

Diary Log 8th November 2012

Within this lesson, I've created two different Prezis on which is based on Camera Shots and the one based on movement and equipments. These Prezis provide extended information and example of the different types of Camera Shots and movement and equipment, i will be posting the Prezi in my other posts within this blog.

We also started to look at different types of Pre-Production elements. The different types of elements most be used within our production, so that we are able to have a quality type of production.
Our deadline for this production will be in Christmas/Start of January, so all types of elements and production will be done.

The types of elements i will be posting within this blog are:
StoryBorads
Script           *May not be within the 1 mins production*
Characters   *Character Profile, Mood Board*
Staging        * Shots, Effects and Angles*
Plot              *Equilibrium - Beginning, Middle, End*
Setting         *Location, Health risks assessments*
Content        * Purpose and Overall Story line*

The content of the production we would be looking at different types of purposes within our film. So i would be researching about different types of productions, morals, characters, location and also genre that we would be doing in order to create a piece of production.
The types of questions and subjects that i would be looking at are:

  • Whats the moral of the story?
  • Underling message
  • Actors/Actress
  • What is the Plot of the story?
  • Emotionally what is going to happen to the characters?
  • Mise-En-Scene
  • Equilibrium - The Climax
  • Relevancy - ( is the whole story relevent and are the props and characters used relevent to the whole overall purpose and genre of the production)
Our production is called Equilibrium Production. We based our name within the Torodu media and film theory.

Thriller

Vampire Dairies

Brief Background of the series
Within this scene, a girl is crying. There is chick who is annoyed and one of her friends tells her about something that happened to one of their friends. She gets annoyed yet doesn't do anything, he provokes her, yet she is still calm. She starts to talk to him and calm down a bit and tell her that she loves to be an ordinary person.

Camera Shot
There are various types of camera shots, which would create some sort of tension between the two people who in the bed. The producer used various types of shots, which include mid, wide, long and close up in order for the viewers to see and engage with the production. The producer would do this in order to get the viewers more interested into the piece.

Lighting
The lighting is dim, as the producer wanted to create that dangerous and mysterious glow into the scene. The producers did this becuase he or she wanted to protray the image of the vampires and the dark and gloomy characteristics they have.

Sound
Non-Diegectic Sound: This would be the smooth music which is played.
Diegetic Sounds: The natural voices the conversation the people are having.

Teen

Hollyoaks

Brief background of the series
There are two men in a room who are in love, they have an argument or have a fall out. One of them is worried about the other. They believe they have the right to know what happened. another scene where Brandon speaks to his mother and takes her to a holiday, yet he can't go as he has things to do and run the business.

Camera Shot
At the start there is mid shot of both the males having a conversation. It starts off a below shot of Brandon, yet a back shot of the other male. Then when they in bed, there is a top mid shot, showing them two having a conversation. There is a wide/long shot of the the elderly and Brandon when they was having a conversation.

Lighting:
Dimmed light :
The lighting was dimmed to create that romantic/tense feeling
There was normal light which was from the daylight, which just created a natural feeling to the atmosphere.

Sound:
There was only Diegetic sounds, so that would be  sounds like the conversations which that the actors are having.

Period Drama

Jennifer Ehle & Jeremy Northam - Period Drama

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD3ksiRP-q0

Brief background of the series
There is a man and a meeting each other  While they are walking they are silently in their heads speaking to each other. There is a scene where the woman reads a poem and express her love for the man. There are various different shots which show the time and passionate love they had for each other

Camera Shot
There are various different types of shots from close up to mid shots to show the emotions going through both the lovers, but also mid to show the body language  There are various types of long and wide shots to show the type of material or location or things they would do together to spend and share their love together.

Lighting:
The lighting is very creamy, the reason the producer did this was so that they can indicate the timing and date the film is being made at. However the lighting isn't dark, however dimmed a little, however the producer did this in order to create the tension of the lovers and the romantic feeling.

Sound:
Diegetic sounds:
The sound of the people talking

Non-Diegetic Sounds:
Music playing while the couple remember the time they had together

Crime

Criminal Minds
Brief Information of series
Within this scene of two policeman and woman are in a room and looking at a scene where either a family or a little girl has died. They check the room for evidence. There is a scene were two women start running out a car with a bat. there is a scene where all the FBI cops all gather around and they all start having a conversation. They discuss the matter in hand. There is another scene were the victims mother attacks a man and points a gun at him. He then tells her about where her daughter is.

Camera Shots
1: Shot of the picture on the wall. ( Extra zoomed in )
2: Mid/Shoulder shot of the policeman entering the room.
3: long shot of the bedroom which the police man has entered
4: Close up shot of the police mans face when he looks at the bedroom
5:Close up of the police woman who communicates with the police man
6:  mid shots of both the police man and woman communicating
7: Close up shot of a bags on the floor
8:Close up of the police man checking the bag
9: close up of the bag being opened
10: Mid shot of the camera moving to the right hand side of the room,
11: Close up of material/papers on a dashboard on the wall
12: Wide/long shot of the bedroom
13: Close up of the police woman
14... continuous different types of shots

Also within this piece, the producer created these different types of shots, so that the viewers wouldn't get bored, but also to create tension and for the viewers to be able to feel the atmosphere within the scene. The reason why the producer choice these types of shots was because these types of shots engage the viewers and make the viewers more attracted to the piece.

Lighting
The lighting within this piece is very different. As within crime type of series, there would be dark and dim lighting, to create that gloomy, dangerous atmosphere, as shown within this video. But there is also normal lighting which is created from the light bulbs.

Sounds\
The sounds are mainly diegetic sounds, which means that all the sounds are naturally made, so this would be sounds which are made from people communicating and objects being lifted or carried by the actors.

Comedy

Rules of Engagement

Brief Information of series
Within this scene two couples want to have kids however through surrogacy , so they went to the doctors in order to see how they can have a kid. The doctor ordered Jeff to get a sample of his sperm to the doctor in order for them to carry on the procedure. Within this scene, he goes to a room and tries to get the sperm for the doctor. As he was taking long, his wife is waiting for him outside the corridor she then knocked on the door telling him to hurry. As this is an adult humor based comedy, they started to talk about Jeff "skills" in bed. He started then telling her that his distracting her from his business.

Camera Shots
1 : Mid shot of the doctor
2: Wide/mid shot of the couple
3: Side shot of the couple
4: Mid shot of the female
5:Mid shot of the male
6:Mid shot of the doctor
7- this becomes continues when the conversation continues
8 : Jeff stands up, Mid shot of him standing up
9: Mid shot of the doctor
10: Wide shot of Jeff leaving the room
11: Mid/ close up of the female talking
12: Conversation of the female and doctors continues and its a close/mid shot
13: Wide shot of the male sitting in a room, yet the film zooms close to him
14: Long shot of female standing outside the corridor
15: Etc.... of camera shots

So as you can see there are different types of shots, the reason why the producer does this is to create tension and so that the producer can allow the viewer to be apart of the episode and to interact with the production.

Lighting
The lighting is all the same, its bright yet however its like normal daylight. The producers did this in order to get the vibe that the couple are in a normal day doctors visit. So there wasn't any dark or dim lights, as the producers wanted to show that it was a morning. The light is mainly coming from the lights in the rooms and in the corridor.

Sounds

The sounds of the film was digetic sounds and non digetic sounds.
The Digetic Sounds: The actors speaking and having a conversation
The Non-Diegetic Sounds: The audience laughing and cheering

Sci-Fiction

Doctor Who

Brief Information about the series

Within this scene, Doctor who, his assistant and rowry were fixing the time machine, while having a conversation about Doctor who's assistant and her winning this competition because of her short skirt, meanwhile they were talking about it, rowry dropped something which made the time machine stop, and they landed somewhere. Another time machine appeared inside the time machine, however this time machine is weird and you could go in there and come out the other door next to it. while the gang were trapped there, they had to make a decision on how to fix this.

  16. close up
  17. above camera angle
  18. close up
  19. wide screen ... etc
as you can see the camera shots change when ever anyone is speaking or anyone is moving, the reason why the producers did this, so that the audience are able to interact with the scene

Lighting

Lighting is dim, however clear. Whenever doctor who is changing and fixing the time machine, the light within the time machine dims and brightens. When some item dropped the lighted went off, however we could still see the characters. The reason why the producers did this is so that they are able to create a sense of excitement into the atmosphere.

Sound
The sounds which were accruing where both diagetic and non diagetic sounds. There were the sounds of screw's and hammers, there was also the massive change when the machine was broken.

Single Camera Production

Introduction
Within this production, i would be creating both a minute and a 5 minute production. Within this production i would be using a single camera, i would be analysing different types of single camera techniques and drama's.

A mode of production where one camera operates at a time and the shots are done in the most logical  efficient order. The use of single camera technique is so that the audience are able to interact with the product, in order words its a way where the audience would feel apart of the production. Within single camera techniques there are various different types of advantages and disadvantages.
The disadvantages of single camera production are that within the production, the director and producers would need to take several different types of shots, in order to show different skills within the production, but also so that the production wouldn't be boring. So they would need to take several shots from different angles within the single camera. The other disadvantage of this would be that the producer would have to take several shots in order to take the right image/film. So this indicates that single camera production take a lot of time to produce and a lot of time, would indicate it would take more time to edit. The time it takes the production also to edit much longer, as this would be an disadvantage.

However on the other hand there are some advantages of single camera techniques, it makes the production look like the producer used a multi-camera however they didn't, the advantage of this is so that the production would then be able to look more professional. Also within single camera production, they are very cheap, this indicates that the cost of the production would cost as much as multi-camera production. Within a single - camera production you would have more control of what is going on, this indicates that the director would be able to have control the different types of things going on within the production and they are able to control the different types of shots/angles being taken. The quality of the production are the same, this indicates within the production, the quality of the video is going to be the same, the advantage of this is that the sequence of the production going to be the same. Also the last advantage of single camera production, is that its very easy to get around as you would only be using one camera. The advantage of this is the speed of the production and moving from one location to another.

There are different types of generes such as Sci-fi, Comedy, Thriller and drama types of film which make single camera production. The way they form there single camera production is used in different ways, which they want to enage with the audience. The production is met, so that the audience are able to make the customers think that they use more then one type of camera.

Equilibrium:

Todorov theory is based on narrative structure type of production, this theory implies that within every narrative production there is a structure, also within a non-narrative production there is still a structure. Todorov made this theory becuase he believes in a production there is a beginning, middle and an end. Within Torodov theory there are based type of characters which narrative structure films are based upon these are:
  •  The Villain - opposes the hero.
  • The Donor - helps the hero by giving him a magical object.
  • The Helper - helps the hero.
  • The Princess - is normally the reward for the hero and needs to be protected from the villain.
  •  The Father - recognizes the hero and is normally sought after in the narrative
  • The Dispatcher - sends the hero on his task.
  • The Hero - reacts to the donor and gets the princess.
  •  The False Hero - takes credit for hero's actions or tries to marry the princess.

(1) "The theory is simply this:
  • The fictional environment begins with a state of equilibrium (everything is as it should be)
  • It then suffers some disruption (disequilibrium)
  • New equilibrium is produced at the end of the narrative "
Equilibrium is a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced, this is linked into a production as there is balance when the production is made as there would be a structure which the audience would understand.

    •  A state of equilibrium (all is as it should be)
    • A disruption of that order by an event
    • A recognition that the disorder has occurred
    • An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
    An example of Todorov Theory:

  •
